The otter is happy, the otter is sad, the otter’s cousin is, for reasons never explained, a doctor. I did not become fluent in asking where the bathroom was, which is a more common travel question than the otter cousin’s medical credentials.
The honest reason I was doing any of this wasn’t hobby-level curiosity. I’d been putting off a move, and a client, and a handful of “somedays” that all quietly depended on me actually speaking French out loud, eventually, to a person… and without an otter present.
What changed things was switching to live classes(Lingoda, specifically) where an actual certified teacher is on the other end of the call, and the entire point is talking, not matching pictures to words.
There’s still a structured curriculum and an app for practice between classes, but the class itself is a conversation, which turns out to be the part the otter never covered.
Three weeks in, I ordered one coffee in French, on purpose, to a real person, and didn’t need a decoy second coffee to cover for it. It’s a small thing. It’s also the exact thing two years and one emotionally complex otter family had failed to produce.
